OBD2 stands for On Board Diagnostics. There has been a port incorporated into most cars for decades, which was originally intended for mechanics to plug in and get diagnostic information from the car’s onboard computer.
In more recent years, a simple OBD reader dongle could be attached to the port on the car. With the advent of Bluetooth and an upgrade to the OBD2 standard (essentially version 2 of the original standard) it has become possible to read this diagnostic information directly from your mobile phone, a tablet device or a computer.
An OBD2 Dongle can attach to an app like Car Scanner or ABRP to display live data using bluetooth connectivity. Using an OBD2 Dongle with ABRP allows ABRP to show live battery State of Charge information, and calculate usage.
