The Myth
Many people believe their electricity bill will skyrocket if they get an electric vehicle.
It’s true that your bill will rise. You’re going to use more electricity, but what’s the true effect.
Let’s get this EV myth busted!
EV Myth Busted
Cheap off peak electricity and overnight charging form the majority of most people’s charging. Using the most expensive ultra-rapid charging brings the cost up to almost the same as petrol, but ultra-rapid charging is not the norm most people.
Fast charging on reasonably fast chargers is still only about half the cost of petrol. The only time you are likely to need ultra-rapid chargers is on a long road trip where you want to make short charging stops.

Personal Experience: My fuel costs have dropped from over $0.15 per kilometer to $0.013 per kilometer. I now spend about $8 per week to travel 600 kilometers. My diesel car used to cost over $100 per week to fill up to travel the same distance.
My costs are based on:
- Electricity @ $0.08 per kWh
- Diesel @ $2.00 per litre
- Kia EV6: 17kWh per 100km
- Kia Sportage Diesel: 9 litres per 100km
- City driving
- Cars are similar sized SUVs
