EV Myth Busted #3: EVs cost more to maintain

The Myth

Electric cars are harder and more expensive to maintain.
EV Myth Busted
A petrol car requires a multitude of liquids, oils and tools.

An electric car has only around 20 moving parts in the drive train, compared to about 200 moving parts in an equivalent petrol vehicle.

EV Myth Busted

An EV has far fewer moving parts, doesn’t require oil changes and has significantly fewer filters to replace. EVs have very little brake wear.

Maintaining an electric car costs only about 40% as much as an equivalent petrol car and about 27% of the cost of maintaining an equivalent diesel.

Brake wear is minimised due to regenerative braking, which puts energy back into the battery instead of being dissipated as heat and brake dust.

Personal experience: My most recent service cost less than $150 (Kia EV6). The equivalent service for my previous diesel (Kia Sportage, diesel) was over $600, so these figures seem about right. Same dealer service centre. EV Myth Busted!
